Department of Environment and Marine Biology

The main activities of this department are focused on the following:
  • Studying the effects of desalination stations on the environment and vice-versa.
  • Studying bio-pollution in desalination stations and determining its causes and how to control it.
  • Studying the types of waters and ensuring that feed water and produced water are free of microbes.
  • Monitoring unexpected natural phenomena such as red tide and the spread of jellyfish.
  • Conducting analyses of microbes and poisons for the commercial sector.
Main achievements of the Environment and Marine Biology Department:
  1. Studying the characteristics of feed water and the level of safety of produced water in terms of microbial pollutants.
  2. Studying the spread of discharged rejected salt water in the vicinity of the stations and its effect on marine environment.
  3. Problems caused by bacteria growth on the reverse osmosis membranes, problems of filtration and pre-treatment, the effect of Chlorine disinfectant and problems of in sea shell pollution in water intake equipment and inside supply lines, and the pipes and the surfaces of heat exchangers.
  4. Analyzing water samples to make sure they are free of microbes, in addition to examining and defining its contents of germs, parasitic organisms and phytoplankton.
  5. Investigating unexpected natural phenomena such as fish kills, algae and the spread of jellyfish.
  6. Environmental analyses and surveys for the public and private sectors.
